Peer Supporters

Peer supporters can include untrained individuals or those who have received brief orientation for their role. Peer support can occur spontaneously when two individuals facing similar life situations meet. It involves sharing experiences, and in a new life context, one person exchanges insights with another who has undergone similar challenges. A peer supporter is someone who has personally experienced a similar situation (such as a life event, crisis, disability, illness, or problem) and has adapted to their own experience. They willingly offer support to others who have undergone similar circumstances.
